While many men and women celebrated love this weekend, the highest attendance of people at any Slam Dunk Contest filled the American Airlines Center in Dallas on Saturday night for the Slam Dunk Contest 2010. Unfortunately, LeBron James wasn’t able to make an appearance, which many people weren’t too happy with, but instead “a two-time champion and three others trying to stop him from breaking a record” took part in this All Star weekend event. Although Nate Robinson (now third time champion of the Slam Dunk Contest) was suffering from a groin injury, he made it look too easy to do something that Michael Jordan and Julius Erving were unable to do – win the competition for the third time. The three challengers who tried to take the champion position of Robinson were Lakers guard Shannon Brown, Charlotte’s Gerald Wallace, and Toronto’s DeMar DeRozen. Brown and Wallace were eliminated easily for not bringing anything new to the table, but it was up to Robinson and the rookie DeRozen to battle it out. To end off the dunk contest DeRozen copied a former move from Robinson by jumping over his teammate Sonny Weems; while Robinson celebrated his last dunk by posing with the Dallas Cowboys cheerleader pom poms. Now it was all up to the votes from the judges and fans, and for the third time Robinson won the Slam Dunk Contest by a 51-49% voting margin by fans. Robinson may have been the first contestant to win three titles in this event, and he is claimed to be a better dunker than Michael Jordan, Spud Webb, and all other dunking legends, but being better known for your dunk success than for anything else you have done in the season makes his achievement somewhat unfilled.
